Predominantly an online jobs company with 85 per cent of its revenues from job searches, the company has started diversifying into newer markets, geographies and mediums.

Mastek earmarks Rs 300 crore for Chennai campus

Mastek Ltd, Mumbai-based software solutions provider, has chalked out a Rs 300-crore investment plan for the next five years to build its software development campus in Chennai, which would be its third location after Mumbai and Pune in the country. The proposed Chennai campus would have capacity for about 5000 people.

Talking to reporters, K Nagarajan, vice president, Chennai development centre, Mastek, said that the company had already bought 17 acres of land in Mahindra City, a special economic zone near Chennai and the first phase of the facility was expected to be ready by 2008. The campus in Mahindra City would have four development facilities with each having a capacity for about 1000 people.

However, the company is likely to commence its operations in Chennai in the next three months with a team strength of 100-120 professionals from a different facility. This Chennai team would cater to mainframe related areas. The company would raise Rs 300 crore through internal accruals. Nagarajan said the company had cash and cash equivalent of $40 million.

The expansion in Chennai comes on the back of expected growth in customer acquistions in the insurance segment in the US and UK, he said adding that Chennai would be the engine of growth in its chosen insurance and mainframe capability areas.

The company's customer base comprises 30 life insurance companies across the globe, including eight of the global top 20 majors.

C-DOT Alcatel to roll out Wi-Max gear

The C-DOT Alcatel Research and Development Centre in Chennai is all set to roll out the world's first consumer premise equipment (CPE) for enabling Wi-Max-based broadband services by April 2007.

The research centre set up last year to work on Wi-Max technology is planning to roll out 10 million units a year from its manufacturing unit in Chennai.

Mr R. Poornalingam, Chairman, C-DOT Alcatel Research Centre Private Ltd, said: "We are awaiting the spectrum policy of the Government since the components used in the CPE is based on the frequency bands. We hope to launch the product by April 2007. This will be priced at about $100 a unit for the retail users."

Wi-Max is touted to be a fourth generation technology that offers data speeds higher than 3G services. The Government is betting big on this technology to push broadband penetration in rural India. The technology offers low-cost solution as an alternative to copper cables at the last mile.

The e-commerce industry in India is at a tipping point and will be `dramatically' different in the next five years, said industry experts at a panel discussion organised by Nasscom in the city.

Speakers included Mr K. Vaitheeswaran, CEO of online shopping site Fabmall; Mr Deep Kalra, Founder, Makemytrip.com; Mr Balachandran Unni, Head-Mcommerce, OnMobile Asia; Mr Mahendra Swarup, Chief Mentor at Smile Interactive; and Mr Ashish Gupta, MD, Helion Ventures, a venture capital fund.

The attitude of citizens has changed slowly over the past five years. Indians are now ready to pay a premium of Rs 40-60 for the convenience of online commerce, said Mr Kalra. They are now accepting the various services offered on the Internet and the increasing penetration of broadband at homes also promises to bring in more revenue for e-commerce players. "We are sitting on a pure gold mine," is how one of them put it.

The success of government-owned IRCTC Web site for online train ticketing is just one of the cases in point that give a glimpse of the potential of e-commerce in India.

Dell to set up facility in TN

Dell Inc, the US-based personal computer manufacturer, will set up its first manufacturing facility in India at Sriperumbudur near Chennai.

Of a total committed investment of $60 million (Rs 270 crore), it will invest $30 million (Rs 135 crore) in the facility in five years.

It is likely to commence operations in the first half of 2007.

It would generate about 1,000 direct jobs and another 4,000 indirectly, according to Mr Paul-Henri Ferrand, Vice-President, South Asia, Dell.

Dell signed an agreement on Thursday with the Tamil Nadu Government to set up the facility in 50 acres of land in the Sriperumbudur Hi-Tech Park.

In the first year, the facility would manufacture 3 lakh-4 lakh desktop computers.

It would assemble PC of any configuration and deliver the unit across India.
